Flu and Tetanus (Tdap) Vaccines

At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Hammerly in Spring Branch, we give two adult vaccines: the flu shot, which is worth getting every flu season, and tetanus toxoid, the booster that protects against tetanus. You can walk in to Hammerly Blvd and the medical staff will give it to you during that visit.

Which one do you need?

Influenza (flu): the virus changes from year to year, so the shot is updated each season. It matters most if you have diabetes, asthma or high blood pressure, are over 65, or live with babies or older adults.

Tetanus toxoid: tetanus gets in through cuts, nail punctures or dirty wounds. If you can't remember your last booster, or you got hurt on something rusty, mention it when you check in.

If your wound needs stitches, you can get the booster while it's being closed through our suturing service.

How should you prepare?

• Tell the staff if you ever had a strong reaction to a vaccine.
• Mention a high fever that day; a mild cold usually isn't a problem.
• Wear a top that lets you uncover your shoulder easily.
• Bring your vaccine record so the new dose can be written down.

What's normal afterward?

Your arm may feel sore, a bit red or swollen where the needle went in. After the flu shot some people feel tired or slightly achy, and it fades on its own. The injected flu vaccine has no live virus, so it can't give you the flu. If you notice trouble breathing or facial swelling, get care right away.

Does it count for the immigration exam?

During the I-693 exam, the Civil Surgeon checks which vaccines you're missing; if flu or tetanus is on that list, it's given here and recorded.

Drop in for your shot Monday through Saturday until 9 PM, or Sunday until 5 PM, and ask the front desk about the price.
