Which symptoms point to a urinary infection?

The classic signs are burning while urinating, rushing to the bathroom over and over and only passing a few drops at the end. Some people notice cloudy, strong-smelling or pinkish urine and feel pressure low in the belly. In older adults an infection sometimes shows up first as confusion or unusual tiredness, so a urine check is worth it even without burning.

How do you collect a good urine sample?

1. You get a sterile cup labeled with your name.
2. You wash your hands and clean the genital area from front to back.
3. You let the first stream go into the toilet and fill the cup with midstream urine.
4. You close the cup without touching the inside and hand it to our staff.

A sample collected this way keeps skin bacteria out, so the result isn't misleading.

What happens if the test confirms an infection?

The medical team looks at your urinalysis together with your symptoms, picks the right antibiotic and explains how to take every dose, even if you feel better early. We send that antibiotic as an e-prescription to the pharmacy you choose, so you can pick it up on your way home. Sometimes a urine culture is also worth doing to identify the exact bacteria; that test takes several days and we call you when it's ready in case the antibiotic needs to change.

When can a urinary infection not wait?

Fever, chills, vomiting or pain in your side or lower back may mean the infection has moved up toward the kidneys: come in today. If you're pregnant, tell us when you arrive, because the treatment is chosen with extra care. If infections keep coming back, we look for the cause in gynecology or in our men's health visit.
