What happens from check-in to checkout?

First you answer some questions about your health, the medicines you take and any allergies. The medical staff checks your vital signs, such as blood pressure and pulse. With that, they decide whether the drip suits you and walk you through its contents during the visit.

Then you settle into a chair, the skin on your arm is cleaned and a thin needle is placed in a vein, connected to the IV bag. The fluid goes in drop by drop. The staff keeps an eye on you the whole time, and when it's done they remove the needle and cover the spot with gauze.

Who should not get a vitamin IV?

In some cases the medical team may say no, or ask for another evaluation first:

• Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• Kidney or heart disease.
• Very high blood pressure that isn't controlled.

• Taking several medications at once.

How do you prepare, and what care comes after?

• Eat a light meal before you come.
• Wear short sleeves or something easy to roll up.
• Speak up during the drip if you feel burning, dizziness or swelling in your arm.
• Press on the gauze for a few minutes afterward.
• If the needle site turns red, warm or painful over the following days, come back so it can be checked.
