The school and sports physical at Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Hammerly in Spring Branch checks that your child is ready to learn, join a team or head off to camp. We do it for kids and teens across Houston and fill out the form the school, league or coach asked you for.

What should you pack before coming in?

  • The school or league form, with the parent section already filled in and signed
  • The vaccination record, on paper or as a photo
  • The names of any medications they take and any known allergies
  • Their glasses, if they wear them, for the vision check
  • Comfortable clothes and sneakers, since they'll need to move around a bit

If the student is a minor, a parent or legal guardian has to come along.

What does the medical team check during the exam?

We start with the measurements: weight, height, blood pressure and pulse. Then the clinic's medical team listens to the heart and lungs, checks the spine, joints and strength in the arms and legs, and runs a simple vision screen. They also ask about fainting during exercise, chest pain while running, or relatives who had heart problems at a young age, because those answers carry the most weight in a sports clearance.

What if the vaccine record is missing a shot?

It often comes up right when you're filling out the paperwork. We go over the record with you and point you to our vaccination service for the shots the school requires at your child's age, so the paperwork doesn't stall halfway.

What happens if the physical turns something up?

Most kids walk out with a signed form ready to go. If there's a heart murmur, higher-than-expected blood pressure or discomfort during exercise, the team may order an EKG at the clinic or, when the result calls for it, arrange a referral to the right specialist before clearing them for sports. What matters is that your child plays safely.

Weekday evenings and Saturdays at our Hammerly Blvd clinic are a good time to bring the kids in without missing class.
