Gynecology: Pap Smear, Cultures & Checkup

Basic gynecology at Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Hammerly in Spring Branch (Houston) covers the Pap smear, vaginal cultures and the routine women's checkup. It's for you if your regular exam is due, or if you're dealing with discharge, itching or burning that won't go away and would rather talk it through calmly in your own language. The initial consultation is free; tests and treatment are paid separately.

How do you get ready for a Pap smear?

• Try to come when you're not on your period; bleeding can make the sample harder to read.
• In the days before, skip douching, vaginal suppositories, vaginal creams and sex.
• Remember when your last period started and whether you use any birth control.
• If you have previous Pap results, bring them or keep them handy on your phone.

What do we do about unusual discharge or itching?

Vaginal discomfort doesn't always have the same cause: it might be yeast, a bacterial imbalance or a sexually transmitted infection, and each is treated differently. That's why the clinic's medical team examines the area, takes a culture when needed and, if the diagnosis is clear, sets the treatment during the visit and sends the e-prescription to the pharmacy you choose. If an STI is suspected, we can also run STD testing with complete discretion.

What happens after the sample is taken?

1. The sample goes to the lab and we let you know when your result is ready.
2. We go over what each part of the report means, in plain words.
3. If the team needs to look at the uterus or ovaries, the ultrasound is done right at the clinic.

What else can you take care of in the same visit?

Many women use the visit to get a pregnancy test or talk about birth control. Tell us everything on your mind at the start and we'll plan the visit to cover it.
