At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Hammerly in Spring Branch, we help you choose and start a birth control method, such as the pill or the shot, after looking at your health. It's for women in Houston who want to decide when, or whether, to have children, with clear information and no pressure from anyone.
Which parts of your health shape the choice?
Before recommending a method, the clinic's medical team goes over several points with you:
- Blood pressure, which we measure at the visit
- Whether you smoke, especially past a certain age
- Migraines, particularly the kind that come with flashing lights or spots in your vision
- Breastfeeding, if you're nursing
- History of blood clots in you or your family
- Medications you take, since some lower the effectiveness of hormonal birth control
How do the pill and the shot compare?
The pill is taken every day, ideally at the same time, and keeps you fully in charge: you can stop whenever you want. It works well if your routine is steady and remembering isn't a problem. The shot is given at the clinic and repeated periodically, so you don't think about it daily; the trade-off is that its effect can't be undone right away and your period may become irregular. The medical team explains the upsides and expected effects of each option so you can compare calmly.
What does your first visit look like?
- You tell us your plans and which methods you've used before.
- We check your blood pressure and go over your health history.
- If there's any chance of pregnancy, we start with a pregnancy test.
- You choose the method with all the information, and if it needs a prescription, we send it electronically to your pharmacy.
- We agree on when to come back to see how you're doing.
What if you want to switch methods?
You can switch whenever you like. If your current method is causing discomfort or no longer fits your life, we talk it through at the visit. If you have an implant in your arm, we also handle subdermal implant removal.
At Hammerly Blvd we see you in Spanish or English, Sundays included.
